Augsburg's Benjamin Weber emphasized the importance of 'character'

Augsburg is preparing to complete its 16th season in the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league. Standing out as one of the most stable clubs in the league, Benjamin Weber drew attention to the importance of team spirit in his exclusive interview with Get German Football News. "At Augsburg, we are not dependent on just one or two main players, we have a good group and this is very important for us," Weber said. Weber, who was appointed as coach from Paderborn in June 2025, emphasized the role of character in the team's success.

"We want to create a successful group and we do not want to depend on just one player. It is very important to remain stable because Augsburg also represents stability. Therefore, it is very good to make a plan together, to have the same mentality and to be in harmony with the club's road map," Weber said. Stating that they won five in six matches between January and February and suffered only one defeat in the last seven matches, Weber announced that they extended Manuel Baum's contract for two years. He praised the successful performance of Baum, who took office instead of Sandro Wagner in December 2025.

"It was not easy to move into a new role, but I remember that he, the whole team and the players gave a great performance. We were not guaranteed to perform like this in the second half of the season, but we made good decisions in the winter period. We performed very well in the second half. Manuel was the decision maker and that is why we extended his contract," said Weber.

Noahkai Banks, Mert Kömür and Anton Kade broke through by playing significant minutes in the 2025/26 season. "We know that everyone is talented when scouting, but it's important to put your brain and your heart together. When we want to create a group, you want to be with people you can spend time with or learn from, and you want to create a bond that you can grow with. We had great character in the second half of this season because we had great character in the locker room," Weber said.

"Teamwork is the key to this success, there is no single individual who has contributed to Augsburg's recent success, it is a group effort and this extends from the top level of the team to the lower level. The keyword for this season and for the years to come should be teamwork. We can develop these talents [Banks, Kömür, Kade] and grow with their performances. We hope everyone can perform at their best," Weber added. Augsburg added that they found a good ground to perform in the Bundesliga.
